Community College star Gael earns prestigious Academy trial
The Sheffield Wednesday Community College is delighted to announce that, after an outstanding first season on our Shadow Scholarship Programme and catching the eye of Sheffield Wednesday Academy coaches during a one-week trial, second-year student Gael has earned an eight-week trial with the Academy's Under-18s.
Following his successful trial last month, the 17-year-old right-back has secured the opportunity to continue his development within the Club's Academy environment with a highly sought after Youth Development 8 (YD8), where he will now train with the Under-18 squad and continue to showcase his ability.
Gael, a second-year BTEC Sports Coaching and Development student and scholar on the Club's Community College Shadow Scholarship Programme, quickly demonstrated his quality and potential to Academy staff.
The talented defender also represents non-league side Thorncliffe Villa FC Under-21s, gaining valuable experience at weekends alongside his studies.
Among those impressed by Gael's performances was former Sheffield Wednesday striker and current Academy coach Lee Gregory, while Under-18s Academy Manager Luke Morgan also recognised the youngster's potential.
As part of the Shadow Scholarship Programme, Gael and his classmates benefit from training and playing opportunities at Hillsborough Stadium, the Club's Middlewood Road training ground and the Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme's football facility on Clay Wheels Lane.
Alongside his football commitments, Gael will continue studying his BTEC qualification with the Community College while remaining fully engaged in his classroom learning and theory sessions.
On his success, Gael said: ’’I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity - it’s unreal to be given the chance to train with the Academy after all my hard work this season. The Shadow Scholarship Programme has helped me grow so much as a player, and I’m excited to keep working hard and make the most of this opportunity.’’
Sheffield Wednesday Under 18s Academy Manager, Luke Morgan, said: "Gael's character stood out from the very first week he was on trial with us. He's got a strong mentality, he's quick, powerful and athletic, but also showed us his willingness to learn and consistently show up as the best version of himself. He's a talented player with real potential.
"I'd definitely recommend the Shadow Scholarship and Education Programme. It's a fantastic pathway that strengthens the link between the Community College and the Academy, and there are a lot of talented players within the College programme who are capable of progressing on to various football pathways."
Ryan Priest, Education Sports Tutor, Football Coach and Post-16 Football Co-ordinator, said:
"After a fantastic first season and a series of outstanding performances, Gael has demonstrated remarkable development and a real commitment to excellence throughout our programme.
“Off the pitch, he has embodied the professionalism, self-discipline and work ethic that define our ethos, balancing his academic studies with his football brilliantly.
“Gael's achievement continues to demonstrate the pathways, outcomes and success of our Post-16 Shadow Scholarship Programme, creating genuine opportunities for players to progress into both professional academy football and the non-league game."
The Sheffield Wednesday Community College still has a limited number of places available for the 2026 academic year and is already recruiting students for 2027.
