Same Shirt, Different Lives
Football brings thousands of people together every week, but supporting the same club doesn’t always mean feeling connected to other supporters. Same Shirt, Different Lives is a new pilot programme by The Roots Programme, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. This pilot has been designed for men who support the club, using a shared love of Wednesday as a starting point to bring fans together beyond matchday.
It is built around the simple idea that football can create common ground between people who may have lived very different lives. Starting with the game and supporter culture, the programme creates relaxed, guided opportunities for fans to connect, reflect and get to know one another in ways that go beyond the usual matchday experience.
The focus on men reflects a deliberate choice to create space for conversations around identity, background and life experience that are often harder to reach in other settings. Using football as common ground offers a familiar and accessible way into those conversations.
The format is flexible and shaped with the club. It may include informal group activities, time around football itself, and moments of conversation grounded in shared experience rather than formal discussion. The focus is on keeping things familiar and welcoming, rooted in what it means to support Sheffield Wednesday.
Same Shirt, Different Lives will run as a pilot, with supporters invited to take part and help shape what it becomes. Sessions are small and guided, with a relaxed feel throughout. No experience is needed – just a willingness to take part.
