Short Breaks project visits Whirlow Hall Farm!
Earlier this month, children who attend Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme’s Short Breaks project visited Whirlow Hall Farm.
The Community Programme’s Short Breaks project, funded by Sheffield City Council, offers a safe and supportive space for children with disabilities to connect with others, receive support, and take part in a wide range of activities. The project runs throughout the week from Hillsborough Stadium, with regular trips to give the children new experiences outside of their usual environment.
Their latest trip saw ten participants visit Whirlow Hall Farm to meet the animals, enjoy a farm tour, and take part in an exciting scavenger hunt. There were cows, sheep, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits – and plenty of smiles.
The children described it as “awesome” and genuinely loved every moment. At first, some were a little nervous about getting close to the animals, but thanks to the patience and encouragement of both staff at SWFCCP and the wonderful team at Whirlow, many of them stepped out of their comfort zones and even fed the animals.
The aim of the trip was to help build the children’s confidence around animals and to give them opportunities to socialise with other young people who face similar challenges. It was heartwarming to see them supporting each other, growing in confidence, and making memories together.
William Palmer, SEND Coordinator at SWFCCP, said:
“To give these young people the chance to take part in structured activities like sport, games, arts and crafts, and social events in a safe and supportive environment is fantastic. The project gives families and carers some time to themselves and reassurance that their child is in good hands. It’s designed to offer both enjoyment and development for young people, while also providing important respite for those who support them every day. For me, it's not just about running sessions – it’s about making a difference in the lives of young people and their families.”
