SWFCCP Expands Alternative Provision Curriculum

Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme is delighted to welcome more students than ever to its Alternative Provision programme for the 2025/26 academic year.

SWFCCP’s Alternative Provision offers education outside of mainstream schools for children who require tailored support due to special educational needs, health challenges, or behavioural difficulties. It is designed to help students achieve their educational goals and improve their future opportunities.

In previous years, the curriculum has primarily focused on the fitness, health, and sport industries, with football at its core as a powerful tool for engagement.

Now, following consultation with local partners, parents, and students, SWFCCP is excited to announce the launch of a new Construction Pathway. This initiative will give students hands-on experience and practical skills to help them explore careers across a wider range of sectors beyond sport.

Students will have the opportunity to learn woodwork in a dedicated workshop, producing items such as bird boxes, mini community libraries, and planters, using materials donated by SWFCCP Corporate Supporter ForgeFix, as well as a well-known Sheffield-based builders’ merchant. The creations will then be donated to local community groups, partner schools, and public spaces.

They will also gain experience in construction, including training in bricklaying. Alongside these practical skills, staff will continue to embed core subjects—English, maths, and science—into the curriculum to ensure students build strong educational foundations.

Paul Jackson, Alternative Provision Coordinator, said:

“Listening to our students and partners, we found that around 80% wanted a more hands-on experience to prepare for careers in industries such as construction. This new pathway is designed to meet that need and open doors to exciting opportunities.”
