The team have got off to a flying start to the domestic season with a 3–0 win over FC Farsley Deaf.
Harry Boorman, SWDFC Vice-Captain, said:
“It’s a really good setup, fantastic facilities, we know each other well, and we’re excited to see what the future holds.”
The team was set up by SWFCCP’s SEND Coordinator and England Deaf International, Will Palmer, and features several England internationals who communicate through British Sign Language, visual cues and gestures.
Deaf football has some slight differences compared to mainstream football. For example, the referee raises a flag as well as blowing a whistle when stopping the game.
The team is aiming to build a strong deaf community in Sheffield by harnessing the power of football to promote the values of inclusivity and representation. The Deaf Owls hope their fine form will inspire the next generation of not just deaf footballers but disabled players too, with support from the local community.
Boorman added:
“Make sure you get involved, as you’ll meet so many good people and it’s a great atmosphere.”
The Deaf Owls will be hoping to continue their fine domestic form into the EDF Challenge Cup and EDF Knockout Cup, with the potential to play live on TNT Sports at the end of the season.
The team has also kindly been sponsored by SWFCCP charity partner SignHealth, a deaf health charity that offers support through mental health challenges, domestic abuse, and more.
