Mentoring and Premier League Kicks Help Leo Build Confidence

Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme has helped Leo make significant progress through a combination of Premier League Kicks sessions and one-to-one mentoring.

Leo first joined Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme’s Concord Premier League Kicks session in 2025, initially lacking confidence and struggling with social skills. Since then, he has attended more than 30 sessions, where regular engagement and structured activities have helped him develop greater confidence, resilience and interpersonal skills.

While benefiting from the programme, Leo continued to face challenges at school. Working in partnership with Hinde House School, SWFCCP Youth & Inclusion Coach Angel Torres began providing one-to-one mentoring. Across more than 20 mentoring sessions, Leo has worked towards short- and medium-term goals, leading to improvements in both his behaviour and school attendance, while also helping him build positive friendships in and out of school.

As his confidence has grown, Leo has embraced even more opportunities through SWFCCP. He has represented Sheffield Wednesday at football tournaments, taken part in holiday activities and continues to develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in different environments.

Reflecting on Leo's progress, Youth & Inclusion Coach Angel Torres said:

"Since mentoring Leo, his confidence, resilience and social skills have developed massively. He has become more focused and has even started taking lead roles during mentoring sessions, helping to lead activities and share ideas. Leo has also improved his football skills, which has contributed to a more positive mindset and better mental wellbeing. He is now taking part in multiple activities and opportunities with SWFCCP, highlighting the importance of positive role models and meaningful opportunities for young people."
