Community Cup Raises Over £1,150 for Weston Park Cancer Charity and SWFCCP
Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme was delighted to host the Weston Park Community Cup earlier this month, bringing teams from across the region together for a fantastic day of football in support of two important causes.
The tournament raised more than £1,150, with the proceeds being split between Weston Park Cancer Charity and Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme to help support the vital work both organisations carry out across our communities.
The day was filled with competitive football, great sportsmanship and a brilliant community spirit, as teams came together to enjoy the game while raising money for charity.
Congratulations to FC Five Nations, who were crowned Community Cup champions after an impressive tournament.
The team was formed after Carlo Vidal Miranda began organising weekly seven-a-side football sessions through the University of Sheffield. Open to both staff and students, the sessions have created a welcoming and inclusive environment, bringing together people from a wide range of countries and backgrounds through football.
One of the team's players, Ian Robb, explained why supporting Weston Park Cancer Charity meant so much to them:
"FC Five Nations was formed after Carlo Vidal Miranda began running weekly 7-a-side football sessions through the University of Sheffield. As a current member of University staff, I attended many of these sessions. Although they are open to both students and staff, they are predominantly attended by international students, creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
As my brother is currently undergoing treatment at Weston Park Hospital, I suggested entering a team into the tournament as an opportunity to bring the group together while supporting a cause that is personally meaningful to me."
